Habitat for Humanity are looking for 150 volunteers to join Rock the House which will build 12 homes for families in Indonesia.

Over just one week, you’ll work with a team alongside fellow volunteers from all works of life, home beneficiaries and local skilled labourers to help construct a new home for a family in need. No prior construction experience is required, and there is a job for every skill and fitness level.

At Habitat for Humanity, we believe a safe and decent home is a rock solid foundation for a family, an opportunity on which they can build a better life. Better, affordable living conditions lead to improved health, stronger childhood development and the ability — and financial flexibility — to make forward-looking choices.

We work in partnership with communities to address housing needs and build strength, stability and self-reliance.

Rock the House will be building 12 homes for families living in substandard conditions, but will also feed into Habitat for Humanity’s wider work in the community of Selopamioro. Families will also receive skills training and with a home to call their own, they have a place to start a business and earn a steady income.

Through shelter, we empower.

No building experience is required. All you need is an open mind and a willingness to get your hands dirty. You will be working alongside local construction workers who will show you the ropes and supervise the build.

The 12 homes that will be built during the week will be constructed from cement blocks. Team members will be mixing cement, completing foundations, bricklaying, rendering and painting. Each task is demonstrated and supervised by a local construction worker.

What kind of help and support is offered?

Habitat for Humanity Australia, our trained team leaders and our in-country partners will support and look after you from registration through to the completion of your build. Before you leave we will equip you with all the information and resources you need. Once you arrive in country you will be met at the airport and transported to your accommodation. Absolutely, volunteers from all locations are welcome to join Rock the House. Please keep in mind all volunteers are required to have a valid police check from their country of residence and donations are only tax deductable in Australia.

What does my fundraising go toward?

Our volunteers fundraising ensures the success and impact of Rock the House and Habitat’s work overseas. Habitat’s fundraising model is tried and tested. Habitat operates in over 70 countries and has been in operation for 40 years. Thousands of Australians have taken advantage of the opportunity to fundraise, volunteer and build with Habitat in South East Asia using this model. Habitat globally has also mobilised over 2 million volunteers.

What happens if I don’t reach my fundraising goals?

We require a $1,700 minimum fundraising contribution from all volunteers. If you set your target higher than this but don’t meet it, that’s ok. All you need to contribute is the $1,700.

How much time will be spent building each day?

Generally, each day you will spend 7 hours on the build site. During the day you will have three main breaks, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. We encourage all volunteers to take rests regularly. You will return to the hotel at around 4:30pm each day. Each afternoon you will have approximately 2 – 3 hours before dinner to relax, reflect on the day and to wash away the dirt!

If you are not feeling well and want to leave early from the build site we will have extra vehicles on hand to transport you back to the hotel.
